Hybrid vehicles are new on the scene in the last couple years. They are typically hybrid gas and electric vehicles and can get much better gas mileage than traditional gasoline fuel based vehicles. Most hybrids do not require to be “plugged in” to recharge, but recharge the batteries from the gasoline engine. Newer hybrids on the horizon such as the Chevy Volt are expected to get as much as 100 miles per gallon of gasoline. In those vehicles a small gasoline engine is used to charge the batteries. Any trips less than around 40 miles would draw exclusively from battery power. (So… you could go exclusively on batteries for most day to day commuting.) It should also be possible to plug in the Volt for charging.
In recent years the Honda hybrid and Toyota Hybrid have been among the most well known hybrid car alternatives. In recent years though announcements of other models than the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius. The Toyota Camry Hybrid is an option as is the Honda Civic Hybrid and even Ford Hybrids are available Saturn Hybrids and Nissan Hybrids are available now as well. So, what is the best hybrid car for you? That’s a hard question to answer, but when there were just 2 or so hybrid models to choose from there was not much choice. Today, the choices are much greater and you will likely have a better chance today of finding a car that is a hybrid also suits your needs. (Cargo/passenger/etc.)
As the technology is perfected we should see many other great fuel saving alternatives such as the hybrids. Combined with other alternative fuel technologies this should start making a real impact in the demand for fuel in coming years.
