Do not have this installed in your home. I had it insalled in my EnergyStar certified home. Not only did it crash our central air once
already, we no longer have any control of the tempature in our house. It is currently 80 degrees in our home. I cannot sleep and it is disrupting my performance at work. All who see this post, do NOT fall for this trick. They will cut your air on an 85 degree day. Needless to say, we will have this removed from our home come Monday.

Good point on the efficiency of some devices.... I mean if you assume a switch off for 15 minutes versus something running in a power saving mode for 15 minutes - some units might do better staying in their own managed power saving than having to start back up after the power is switched off by progress...

It feels very "nanny-ish" to me. I'm not comfortable with idea. (I don't know maybe for the large percentage of people that aren't home most of them time this isn't an issue - of course.... if I were one of them I'd be looking into more efficient thermostat/timers so the AC/heat isn't on when it doesn't need to be anyway...)

I was interested to see your post, because I, too was thinking this doesn't sound like such a great way to save energy. Here in North Carolina they are only giving us a $25 annual credit. But that's the least of my concerns. I stay home with two preschoolers and we need a comfortable home. I drive a Prius, recycle everything possible, have changed my light bulbs, and try to do everything I can, but this program just doesn't seem appealing. It wasn't explained well enough and seems a little invasive. Can't they think of a better way? And what are the collateral effects? For example, how would their shutting off my AC impact the effiency or operation of my AC? I can't imagine that my AC was designed to run optimally under conditions when it is being shut off by an external factor. I'm not signing up for now.

I am also interested in the energy input to energy output because I am doing a research project on this and the other technologies for creating energy from waste for my senior project at the University of California, San Diego.

I know that there are two types of by products. First, a syn-gas which is used to generate electricity by either a gas-turbine or the heat generated from the plasma torches can also be utilized in a steam turbine. Second, the heavy metals that melt down create a vitrified glass which can be utilized in construction for roads and insulation. The ratio of energy input to energy output is the key to this issue? Will Florida receive their bang for their buck? Only time will tell.

If anyone knows any other technologies out there that convert waste to energy, economically and environmentally please let me know.

Yes, finally the gas is getting more available throughout NC. For a while there it was pretty bad. Long lines up to 1 mile long and there were actually peuople following the gas trucks at night on the highways to get gas. That was unreal and the price of gas at some spots was upwars of $4.50 to $5 per gallon due to the increased demand and lack of supply.
